The extreme limited view of the self
More actions
We do not become aware of the extreme limited view of the self until it is compared to the unboundedness of superimmortality. Conscious beings including humans have the potential to be superimmortal in a universe. They however, can not see this potentialness in themselves. Most people see a very limited version of themselves unless they have a deluded sense of grandioseness within a version of themselves. I and most people see themselves as a body in nature plodding through life experiences one at a time in a mostly continuous fashion except for sleep and other times of unconsciousness or unawareness. We have to walk, We can not fly by our own body's abilities, nor live under water or in outer space. We have to live on the surface of the earth with specific conditions that have to be met for survival of our body. We can not control the environment other than by the use of our bodies. We do not have telekinesis, teleportation, mind reading, or any number of other supernatural powers even though some people think they do. Through science and technology we have developed ways to accomplish things that we could not have before by our bodies alone. Our consciousness is also very limited even though we know we have had a conscious past we do not have an accurate picture of the multiplicity of past events and experiences. Our consciousness seems to progress and change from moments to moment. We only seem to experience the present moment even if the moment is about past experiences. We can plan for the future and can imagine what future experiences will be like. Some people believe that once ones body dies that is the permanent end of the self making the self limited to a life time as described above. However, many people believe in simple immortality which is basically an extension of conscious life after death in the same basic form as before that is moment to moment conscious existence. It may not be in the form of a body or experiences on earth or even a clear feeling of being conscious but it will be a singular moment to moment experience of something where you still have limited control of what you experience, where you can go and what you can do. It is difficult to see the self as different from these two perspectives on the self i,e,. the mortal self and the simple immortal self. The superimmortal self is vastly different and can be understood. Conscious beings including humans are superimmortal. It is just that many versions of each superimmortal self are not aware of it. Science and philosophy until know has not been complete enough to understanding superimmortality and the superimmortal self.
