Continuousness and continuity through structure and functioning
More actions
Mortalists believe that continuousness and continuity of self is gained only through the continuousness and continuity of the original body. Because of this belief once the body is permanently dead there is no way to continue the conscious self after death of this body. Superimmortality predicts that what is important for conscious survival over time is not continuousness and continuity of the body but continuousness and continuity of the structure and functioning of matter. The body can give continuousness and continuity of the structure and functioning of matter. But it can also, depending on the environmental conditions that the body encounters over time, produce structures and functionings of matter that do not produce a consciousness that the original will experience. For example, if your body's structure and functioning changed or was changed to that of George Washington when he turned 50 years old, your body would no longer produce your consciousness. It would produce a body that no longer had any of your knowledge, beliefs, self identity, memories etc., but it would produce a consciousness that had all of the first US president's memories, self identity, knowledge, personality etc., has at exactly fifty years old. You would not longer consciously exist. Superimmortality predicts that there would be continuousness and continuity of the structure and functioning of George's body from when he was fifty years old. Your body would no longer have continuousness and continuity of the structure and functioning from your previous structure and functioning in your body.
