There are two basic types of singular theories of conscious existence. The first is the [[soul]] type singularity;  you are your soul and when your body dies your soul continues on after death. Your body is singular. Your soul is singular. And your consciousness is singular. The problem with this theory is that there is no real evidence of a soul or other equivalent concept. Nonetheless, most people believe in souls or the like because it allows for [[immortality]] or [[life after death]]. Consequently, many people try very hard to prove the soul's existence however, without scientific success.

The other type of singular theory is based on the body. You are your body. Your body is a singular object, thus you are a singular thing. When the body dies you die with it. Your body will never come back to life so you will not ever exist again. There is no life after death there is no immortality. Many scientists,  humanists, and intellectuals believe this. Thus, the scientific consensus is that there is no life after death. Some religions have proposed resurrection of the original body as a way to achieve life after death through the singular body theory of the self.

The first argument for singularity of the self from the body theory is that you are your body, your body is a singular object, thus you are a singular thing. This argument is countered with the fact that your existence is based on you being conscious.

The second argument is that if your conscious existence is based on you being conscious, then you are what you are experiencing right now. Since you are only experiencing what you are right now any other consciousness that exists now is not you. 
 
The third argument is that because the body is so complex you can never make an exact functioning replica of the original. Consequently, even if identical [[structure and functioning]] produces identical consciousness identical structure and functioning can never be produced. 

The fourth argument for singularity is that if you could make the exact [[consciousness]] of the [[original]], it would by necessity be experiencing a different consciousness because it is in a different spot thus its neurons will be stimulated differently by a different environment through the senses. Since the identical replica is experiencing a different consciousness than the original, it is thus not you.
