A spectrum is like a mathematical continuum except for the ideas that there can be clear distinctions in the parts of the spectrum. Red is different than blue. but the actual scientific concept is based on a mathematical continuum of the wavelength of light where there is only the change in wavelength or frequency of the light from one point on the continuum to the next. The eye divides the colors by using different types receptors "cones" in the retina  of the eye that absorb different wavelengths and then sends a signal to the brain.
